How much energy will your new home use?

Estimate a new home's electricity and gas use, utility costs and the solar size to plan for, before construction begins. Compare mixed-fuel and all-electric designs.

Solar planning

Title 24 requires solar on new homes, but the minimum often won't cover a modern home's full use.

Solar production
kWh per year
Share of use covered
production ÷ use
Size to cover 100%

How these numbers are calculated

The household baseline covers lighting, refrigeration, electronics, dishwashing, ventilation fans and other everyday use. It's scaled to California's 2019 Residential Appliance Saturation Study (RASS), where the average single-family home used about 7,550 kWh a year for everything, including air conditioning.

Heating and cooling use the same North Bay climate values as the NRG Geek Heat Pump HVAC Calculator, reduced 40% for a new home built to current Title 24 code. Water heating uses the same model as the Heat Pump Water Heater Calculator, based on household size.

Electricity cost is your use times the per-kWh rate, plus PG&E's fixed Base Services Charge. Solar production is size times yearly output per kW for your roof's sun. This is a planning estimate, not a Title 24 compliance calculation or final solar design.

About this planning tool

Is this a solar proposal?

No. It's an educational planning tool, not a proposal, engineering design, Title 24 calculation or bill guarantee.

Will Title 24 solar cover the whole home?

Often not. The code minimum is sized for the building, not for EV charging, pools, ADUs or how you'll actually live in the home.

Why email my results?

It gives you a copy to share with your architect, builder or family, and a starting point for a detailed design.

What's needed for a final design?

Your plans, roof layout and shading, equipment selections, PG&E rate plan and how your household expects to use energy.
