Your yearly EV charging
EV vs gas
Solar to cover your charging
Electricity use by miles driven
How these numbers are calculated
Yearly electricity is your miles times your EV's efficiency (kWh per 100 miles), plus the charging loss. Charging cost is that electricity times your off-peak or peak rate.
Gas cost is your miles divided by the gas car's MPG, times the gas price. Solar size is your charging electricity divided by what one kW of solar makes in a year on your roof, shown in 400-watt panels.
Vehicle efficiencies are typical rated values; real-world use changes with speed, weather, heating and cooling, and driving style. This leaves out fixed PG&E charges, charger installation, public charging, maintenance and the rest of your home's electricity use.
About this planning tool
Is this a proposal or quote?
No. This is an educational calculator. It's not a proposal, engineering design, utility bill guarantee or financial promise.
Are the savings guaranteed?
No. Actual costs depend on your car, rate plan, charging times, season, gas prices and how you drive.
Why email my results?
It gives you a copy of your inputs and results to review later, share with family, or use to start a more detailed conversation.
What else should I check before adding a home charger?
Your electrical panel capacity, the charger location, your PG&E rate plan, and whether solar or a battery makes sense for your other electrification plans.
